Born to Buy

By Chahna Motwani

In every walk of life, we can find advertisement. It is the mirror of our society. Advertisers design advertisement according to the characteristics of society. They try to influence consumer behaviors according to their emotions. That’s why they make different advertisement for different age groups or different communities. Among them kids get influenced the most as they are defenseless ,innocent and not so mature. Studies show advertising begins influencing the requests a child makes to their parents at a very young age. The average child reported spending more than 22 hours in front of the screen each week. The children admitted to having requested about one toy a week and two requests every three weeks for food or drinks. Children today often feel the influence of advertising's subtle messages more strongly than those provided by schools and even parents. When children see these advertisements it gives a wrong impression on their young minds and they start giving a lot of importance to materialistic joys. Children tend to misinterpret the messages conveyed through the advertisement. They end up having wrong notions about many issues.

For example , when children watch young adults in good shape eating junk foods in the advertisements they assume that it is good for the health. A research conducted has shown that children increased their consumption of junk foods after seeing these advertisements. A few countries have banned marketing and advertising targeted at children below the age of twelve.

Advertising companies understand that many parents are looking to please their children, especially if there is a strain on the relationship between the two parties. This means that advertisements will look to coerce children into getting their parents to buy whatever they see on television or on the internet. Children are falling into the world of consumerism today, and parents are as much to blame as the advertisers.
